Bio-Based Alternatives for Lightweighting
🎥BIOntier: The future of lightweight, sustainable materials
At the “Bio-Based Alternatives for Lightweighting” conference, Ahmed Elmarakbi, PhD, CEng, FIMechE, SFHEA and Thierry Renault presented the BIOntier project, a European initiative aimed at transforming materials in the mobility sectors (automotive, rail, aerospace). The aim? To develop lightweight, bio-based composites that reduce our dependence on fossil-based materials while maintaining high mechanical performance.
👉Main strengths of the BIOntier project :
- Collaborative innovation: teamwork with researchers, industrial leaders and SMEs to design high-performance, tailored materials.
- Demonstrators under development: Structural and semi-structural parts are being tested to validate these new solutions.
- Measured environmental impact: Integrated Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to evaluate the ecological impact of these sustainable solutions.
This project marks an important step towards a greener, more responsible industry, by creating materials that combine lightweight properties, durability and respect for the environment.
