SALIENT and GIANCE Strengthen EU–Egypt Collaboration in Advanced Material

The European projects SALIENT and GIANCE are joining forces through a joint workshop hosted at The British University in Egypt (BUE), reinforcing scientific cooperation between the European Union and Egypt in the field of advanced, sustainable and multifunctional materials.

Funded under the Horizon Europe programme, SALIENT and GIANCE share a common ambition: to accelerate the development of innovative material solutions for the automotive, aerospace and energy sectors while integrating sustainability and multifunctionality at the core of material design.

A Strong Technological Synergy

SALIENT focuses on the development of innovative, lightweight, smart and adaptive vehicle structures aimed at improving safety, performance and energy efficiency.

GIANCE, in turn, develops multifunctional graphene-based materials capable of integrating advanced functionalities such as enhanced electrical conductivity, damage sensing and improved mechanical performance.

The collaboration between the two projects paves the way for:

· The integration of graphene-based multifunctional materials into advanced lightweight structures

· The development of smart structural components with self-monitoring capabilities

· Improved durability and performance of structural systems

· More circular and resource-efficient material design approaches

A Workshop Driving Innovation and Knowledge Exchange

The joint workshop highlights this complementarity through:

· Technical deep-dive presentations on lightweight and adaptive front-end structures

· Sessions dedicated to the broader applications of multifunctional graphene materials

· Interactive workshops on multifunctional material testing, characterisation and advanced modelling

· A strategic roundtable discussion on future EU–Egypt collaborations

The event fosters direct dialogue between European researchers, Egyptian academics and industry representatives, helping to identify concrete cooperation opportunities within Horizon Europe and future international research initiatives.

Towards Strategic and Sustainable Partnerships

Beyond knowledge exchange, this initiative represents an important step toward structuring future Euro-Mediterranean research consortia. By combining expertise in innovative structural systems and multifunctional advanced materials, SALIENT and GIANCE demonstrate the power of collaborative research to address key industrial and environmental challenges.

Together, the two projects showcase a shared vision: building cross-border innovation ecosystems that accelerate the transition toward smarter, lighter and more sustainable industrial solutions.
