RISE: A Key Partner in BIOntier Advancing Biobased Materials and Structural Health Monitoring
Research Institutes of Sweden - RISE is Sweden’s national research institute and a leading innovation partner. Within the BIOntier project, RISE brings extensive expertise in biobased materials, particularly focusing on lignin and its valorization for a wide range of applications—including carbon fiber and other carbonized materials, lignin-based binders, elastomers and other biomaterials.
RISE is well-equipped with advanced production and separation facilities, enabling lignin processing from kilogram to ton scales and supporting various lignin modifications. The institute offers comprehensive capabilities in lignin characterization, including chemical and physical properties
In BIOntier, RISE leads tasks related to the standardization and regulation of biobased materials and composites. This includes materials characterization such as C14 analysis for the biobased composites developed within the project. Collaborating closely with User Case (UC) owners and BIOntier partners, RISE will design and develop sensors and devices for structural health monitoring (SHM), leveraging novel additive manufacturing techniques and sustainable processes.
Printed electronics arena (PEA), a renowned innovation cluster within RISE offer state of the art facilities and expertise in sensors, electronics, IoT, pick and place assembly, design and development of sensors and prototypes for SHM applications needed within BIOntier. RISE will work in close partnership with other BIOntier partners involved in biobased composites, materials testing and sensor development for SHM, ensuring integrated and innovative solutions throughout the project.
