BCMATERIALS: Sustainable Material Development, Optimization, and Upscaling
BCMaterials leads the work package that focuses on the development of a sustainable platform for biobased materials, their synthesis and functionalization and their application for the production of all the use cases in BIOntier.
Bio-based composites for hydrogen storage
BCMaterials coordinates the production of bio-based composites for prototyping a gas tank for hydrogen storage (UC5), based on lignin carbon fibers and APA6 with graphene oxide. We are working on the production of a materials that meet all the requirements for the storage of the gas, with sufficient strength and airtightness.
Sustainable composites for water filtration
We are also processing materials for the production of a water filtration device that operates with reverse osmosis under high pressure (UC6). The system is based on hemp fibers and PLA, using different additives to improve the processability. We work hard to produce materials for an UC that will be highly recyclable.
Prototype manufacturing and testing
In collaboration with other partners, such as TECNALIA, IRIS and Hydrosolid, we are designing the best materials that meet the necessary key performance indicators for each UC, which include improved yield strength, fatigue resistance, improved mechanical properties at higher temperatures, recyclability and productivity, among others.
Project Update – Current Progress
BCMaterials has started collecting materials and designing the manufacturing of the lignin carbon fiber tapes (UC5) and the hemp tapes (UC6).
We are producing composites based on APA6, carbon fibers and graphene for UC5 and producing materials based on PLA, hemp and stearate for UC6.
